In this period, Kalākaua and his royal siblings devoted themselves to the study of music theory, composition and the playing of musical instruments. With the ascension in 1872 of composer and multi-instrumentalist Kalākaua to the throne, the musical arts in the Kingdom of Hawai‘i found the patronage and support that would spark a musical wildfire that in time would spread around the globe.

The oceanfront capital city of Honolulu, the cosmopolitan crossroads of the mid-Pacific, had gathered to its shores an unprecedented variety of musical cultures and instruments. The Kealakai Center for Pacific Strings was inspired by the legacy of virtuoso multi-instrumentalist, educator, composer and Royal Hawaiian Band leader Mekia Albert Kealakai (1867-1944), for whom the Center is named.ĭuring the final decades of the 19th century, the Kingdom of Hawai‘i nurtured a profound musical renaissance. Join us in welcoming home the first ever official, one of a kind re-creation of the “Kealakai Exra Large Jumbo” model Martin guitar, the ancestor to the most famous acoustic guitar ever made, the Martin Dreadnought. This exhibition also coincides with and celebrates 2020 as the 100 year anniversary of Mekia Kealakai’s return to Honolulu and his appointment as Bandmaster of the Royal Hawaiian Band. Join us for an epic journey through time to the Source of Strings! Gathered together for the first time on the original campus of Kamehameha Schools where the story of the Hawaiian Steel Guitar began, this exhibition unites centuries of Hawaiian string music heritage, from the indigenous Hawaiian ‘Ukēkē to the ‘Ukulele, from the Dreadnought Martin to the Fender Stratocaster. The Kealakai Center for Pacific Strings joins the Bishop Museum in a groundbreaking exhibition tracing the origins of the world’s most iconic stringed instruments to their source in the vibrant, cosmopolitan musical community of the 19th century Hawaiian kingdom.
